Abstract

The disentailment of church lands in the second third of the 19th century provided an opportunity for most Spanish citie s to initiate certain limited inner-city reforms. A few years later, when the growing effects of industrialisation in many of these cities made further, more extensive urban developments imperative, the Compulsory Purchase Act of 10 January 1879 gave Spanish city councils new and efficent legal powers to carry these out. This article offers a fundamentally economic interpretation of the reasons why the city of Granada, encouraged by a group of local businessmen, opened up a modern throughfare, .La Gran Vía de Colón», through the city centre, probably the most ambitious and significant urban works project undertaken in Spain at the end of the 19th century.
