Abstract

Inside the “Global project South. Ports and economic and social development in the Southern Atlantic Ocean” we investigate the mutually induced transformations between the port and the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. We study the growth and expansion of both, the port and the city, trying to understand how the space of confluence between one and the other is articulated. We propose the following hypothesis: the relationship between the city and its port has evolved during all these years, not only in the material or physical plane, but also at a conceptual level- like the understanding of both spaces by their respective plans and projects. We want to know if the transformation observed in confluence area of the port and the city is due to the way in which both spaces have been conceived. For this, we consult the plans and projects that have defined the origin and development of the port, as well as the planning of the city from 1898 to the present. We have carried out an analysis work on the evolution of the city and the port planning to determine if there has been a change in the paradigm or scope of these documents, how this evolution has occurred and what moments have been key in that process.
