An island in the middle of the metropolis. Social life and urban patrimony in the Directed Town of Fuencarral

The Fuencarral new town is located in the municipality of Madrid (Spain) and was part of a
project, signed by the architect José Luis Romany in 1957, that included different social housing districts
implemented by the Ministry of Housing. Over time, this new town has experienced a significant
population ageing process, and an architectural and urbanistic deterioration, that seemed to have
converted it into an «urban limbo», a place where «nothing happened», that was isolated from urban
operations and the social and neighbours’ mobilizations that have taken place in other districts of
Madrid. Nevertheless, in the XXI century there are two important converging factors to point out in order
to understand the changes that are taking place in it: on one hand, the Special Protection and Intervention
Plan (2011), that presented the necessary housing rehabilitation of this new town and the institutional
recognition of heritage that has highlighted its architectural and urbanistic value. On the other hand,
there has been an increase of the neighbours’ mobilizations, that demand public institutions to pay a
closer attention to the new town. This article has the aim to perform a social cartography of the
transformations that have taken place in the Fuencarral new town, its current situation and future
expectations of its inhabitants. For that purpose, we have resorted to a qualitative methodology and have
conducted individual and group in-depth interviews and one focus group in order to identify the different
discourses about the practices and looks over the Fuencarral new town.
