Abstract

The quantification of the effects that transport infrastructure produces in the
territory is a key research topic, usually carried out through measures and accessibility indicators. Additionally, these are basic tools for the assessment and comparison of the different scenarios proposed by the infrastructure plans and transport networks. This research provides a comparative review of the principal studies that have assess and represented accessibility in mainland Spain. For that purpose, seven methodological proposals have been analyzed that have assessed accessibility to road network, although some mixed options are also presented. In this review, some aspects of accessibility have been compared: approaches, measures and cartographic results. The main findings of this research highlight that despite the different accessibility assessment approaches existing, the results revealed an overlap of spatial delimitations of areas with adequate or negative accessibility values. Nevertheless, local or regional differences have been found. Finally, the quality of accessibility indicators has improved during the last years thanks to the greater availability of information and the massive use of Geographic Information Technologies.
