Urban heritage as an opportunity for urban renewal of peripheral metropolitan areas: special reference to Madrid

The paper explores the role of urban heritage, tertiary activities and mix of social
and economic groups in metropolitan peripheral areas urban regeneration, with a special
reference to Madrid. Its opportunity derives from current austerity and sustainability policies
that require recycling existing urban areas. Three metropolitan peripheries are distinguished:
suburban, peri-urban belt and adjacent rural-metropolitan. The article differentiates the types
of urban heritage present in urban centres and peripheries, the possible mixture of social
groups, and the economic activities located at the urban peripheries. The article concludes
that the characteristics of heritage and segregation, or mix of groups and activities, are
contradictory at the different metropolitan peripheries.
