Abstract

Proposals for urban undertakings on university campuses are facing new challenges in
which the sustainability of their activities will be a determining factor in their success. The purpose
of this article is to describe the spatial planning tasks carried out at the Universidad de Cantabria
as part of implementing the Master Plan for the Open Spaces at the Las Llamas Campus. The
characteristics inherent to these types of plans, which are subject to considerable preliminary
reflection, can be used to create a set of case studies for the campus project that are not easy to
achieve through other planning tools. The novelty of this approach relies on the participation of
local entities and the university community, as well as on the level of detail of the activities to be
conducted, which goes beyond merely defining criteria or guidelines for action. The way in which
the initial requirements are integrated into the campus project encourages the participation of the
numerous agents involved, yielding the final solution in an experimental manner. The university
campus, as a setting for academic activity, becomes a veritable laboratory for sustainable practices
and a center of urban transformation initiatives with an exemplary nature.
