The Role of Social Innovation to Address the Economic Crisis
Keywords:

This paper addresses the role of social innovation in the context of the economic crisis as
experienced by local authorities in Catalonia. Specifically, it explores the extent to which socialinnovation
practices have managed to penetrate the areas and districts most affected by urban
segregation, and, in more general terms, the importance of public collaboration in the most
disadvantaged urban areas. The paper is based on research combining statistical and cartographic
analysis of urban segregation over the 2001–2012 period, mapping more than 700 social-innovation
practices and performing a comparative analysis of six case studies. The main thesis of this paper
is that social innovation does not necessarily occur among the most disadvantaged communities,
but rather among the groups with the greatest resources for collective action. It is noted that the
neighbourhoods that have most effectively resisted the effects of the economic crisis are those with
the highest capacity for social organisation and action.
