Abstract

This study assumes two initial premises: heritage as social recognition and the potential
capacity of the heritage formation and management process to generate innovations, preferably of
a social nature. The objective focuses on verifying whether such a process does indeed generate
innovations. The method adopted is framed within a conceptual network of the links between
landscape, heritage, innovation and development, verified by application to the study of the cultural
landscape of the Salado de Añana Valley (Alava). The research confirms that innovations linked to
landscape and architectural rehabilitation and the production process have occurred, but mostly in
the form of social innovations: public–private partnership networks, new institutions and forms of
management and varied local-development initiatives.
