Abstract

Most studies and projects about urban development and the public roads are carried out
based on the standard user, a fictitious person who does not really exist, as the mass of people who
use the streets is very heterogeneous, made up of very different individuals with different capacities
and needs. Therefore, a good design should not consider the standard user as an individual
simplified entity, but rather try to address the complex, functional diversity that our streets need.
In this paper a study is undertaken of the different types of pedestrians who are considered when
studying and designing public highways, considering the basis for new design and classification
criteria with regard to the existing pedestrian diversity.
