Revitalising the street: transformation based strategies
Keywords:
Urban revitalization, streets remodelation, streets redesign, public spaceAbstract
The vitality of our streets, its urban life intensity and human activities and its capacity to
play their required social role depend on many factors, among them, their own internal design and
material configuration are key to this.
For the authors, identifying different strategies to revitalise the street, that were based on its
physical transformation and had proven effective, has been their first aim. Based on the analysis of
several contemporary street refurbishments in different European cities, this paper explores the
possibilities that this kind of retrofitting offers to make our streets more vital. As a result, our study
distilled ten common strategies that are implemented in different ways along different examples.
To those involved in the production of the built environment, this set of strategies constitutes a
valuable guide to redesign the streets to improve their liveability and vitality. It claims for a unitary
praxis in which citizens should be welcome to participate.
