Landscape as a dynamic system: an inspiration for the contemporary city
Keywords:
Landscape, dynamic system, urban form, design strategiesAbstract
This article examines the emerging trend to direct the urban project toward the landscape.
To do this, the paper has been divided into two parts: the first one describes the theoretical
framework, and the second one is a review of some case studies of urban growth and regeneration
projects in Europe and North America (Canada and USA) that have incorporated landscape strategies
based on ecological principles in the early stages of urban transformation.
The theoretical framework focuses on the contemporary discourse of the landscape during the
twentieth century evolved from being considered a scene, to be seen as a dynamic system that
works through processes . Evolved from the pictorial to the instrumental, operational and strategic.
This dynamic condition gives the ability of been selfcreated and can be integrated into the basis of
the design.
The transformation of these processes are an inspiration and a model for the new urban development.
In the second part, urban intervention projects that incorporate this approach are reviewed. This
specificity allows the landscape to articulate the urban, and through its dynamic, understanding
how cities evolve over time.
