Abstract

Spanish cities are tackled with the impact of an economic crisis that is global in its
dimension, but emphasizes urban inequalities. One of the main consequences in social terms is the
strong and selective increase of unemployment, which shows great contrasts in its growth rates
depending on the degree of vulnerability of each city. The text begins with a brief theoretical
reflection about the spatial effects of the capitalist crisis, the concept of urban vulnerability and
possible causes for the observed differences. Then, analyzes the evolution of unemployment rates
in large and medium-size cities for the 2006-2012 period, distinguishing the impact caused by the
burst of the financial & housing bubble (2007-2009) and the recession arising due to the neoliberal
policies of fiscal austerity applied in the European Union (2010-2012). Finally, correlates the
different paths of urban unemployment with the socioeconomic characteristics of cities before the
crisis and reviews some ideas from the international literature.
