The Urban Landscape: An Approach to its Components for Inclusion in Plans and Projects
Keywords:

Throughout the urban landscape’s analysis it is to be found that there are two parts which should
be taken into account: on one hand there is an objective reality that this urban environmental
projects; on the other hand there is a subjective perception of this urban landscape by the
population. The latter is determined by the circumstances in which the subject perceives this
landscape, by modifying, modeling and interpreting it. Following this distinction, the analysis is
divided in two parts: The first one studies such features, that characterize the different urban
landscapes, as: the land morphology, the urban fabric, the “texture” provided by the buildings —
volume, style, materials, position—, the land use, the human aspects —presence, history,
dynamics— and so on. The second one sheds light on the main points of view and the perception’s
stages of the urban landscape by the population. Finally, it is described, as a guideline, the
suitability of the consideration of this information in the application of the landscape policies
which, as it defines the European Landscape Convention, is a concept that affects all of the territory,
including both urban and peri-urban areas.
