Abstract

This article focuses on the decline and revitalization process in old industrialized cities, from the case
study of Langreo (Asturias). Following theoretical approach over the declining and revitalization
processes, the text continues with the case study analysis. After a brief overview of the process of
industrialization and the onset of the crisis in Oviedo in the early sixties of the twentieth century,
analyzes the strategies of revitalization. Mixing analytical and interpretative methodologies (bibliography,
statistics, interviews to local actors, fieldwork, etc.) it reveals the important role of local actors to weave
strong networks, mobilize resources and develop successful revitalization strategies. In the present
case, some deficits detected in Langreo could explain the situation of decline that the city still has today.
