Over recent decades, Urbanism has experienced a progressive withdrawal from the fi eld of “futures”
studies while other fi elds of knowledge have usefully adopted such methods as part of their dayto-
day practices. This paper states the possible causes for this holding back and urges the
advantages inherent in a recovering and reincorporating of such futures studies as within the urban
planning fi eld given the increasing complexity and uncertainty dominating the contemporary urban
scene. Arguing then from these premises, territorial foresight is presented as an appropriate
approach for strategic thinking as to the future of urban territories and, at the same time, as being
a promising tool up to reinforcing the planning process. Territorial forecasting methods are next
described along with their analytical and operational utility which is here critically examined. To
strengthen his case here, the author offers two recent examples of applied territorial forecasting in
the European Union and the City of Burgos, Spain. To round off, the author lays out the challenges
to be overcome by territorial forecasting if it is to be fully accepted as a valid tool as within the
urban and regional planning field.
