Territorial initiatives for the protection of coastal areas: Andalusia as a case in point
Keywords:
Ordenación del territorio, espacios naturales protegidos, planificación medioambiental, gestión del litoralAbstract
The paper’s aim is to analyse the principle territorial initiatives undertaken to ameliorate the gross
environmental damage suffered by the Andalusia coast since the late seventies. The authors have
made a critical and detailed analysis of those major ways and means brought into being in order
to preserve specifi c coastal areas of outstanding importance and high fragility. The most important
among these are here considered to have been: Special Planning for Physical Environment
Protection, Andalusia Coast Directives, Andalusia Protected Areas Network, and Natura 2000
(Habitat Directive).
The results of their research is said to show the important role of the means used during recent
decades; it also points up the interaction as between the means that were available despite their
initial lack of any pre-planning that this should have been so. All this notwithstanding, the authors
also note serious short-falls and contradictions in what has been so far done putting this down to
design and implementation errors which should be underscored and born in mind when new
initiatives are being put forward.
