Abstract

The paper suggests a series of basic requirements for quality in collective housing that would express
themselves as much in the interior of this as the exterior and the neighborhood at large. Such qualities could
be come at through an analysis of contemporary examples of this housing type that offer flexibility,
classlessness, gender equality and sustainability. Furthermore classical examples of rationalism and the
organic could offer much as could the theory of supports and upon such a grounding it is here argued a
theoretical basis could be built that would show that singularity, expressivity and adaptability are in no
wise at variance with that necessary serial imposition that industrial production must perforce call for.
