Abstract

For the authors, the urban processes of spatial inequality and residential segregation are an effect of those
demographic, economic and social transformations that could be seen as concommitants of the globalization
of the Economy. Said processes came late to Madrid in comparison with other European cities but over recent
years have arrived with a rush, bringing with them profound changes in both its social composition and
cultural diversity. The present-day state of the question is much like that of many other developed cities
being marked by increasing inequalities as to of income, assets and between social classes. This process
makes itself apparent in urban space in terms of segregation and in other ways. This notwithstanding, here
the process has its own specifi c aspects and these bear comparison with those found in other large cities of
the south of Europe.
