25 Years of Strategic Planning for Cities
Keywords:
Planificación estratégica, planificación urbana, planificación metropolitana, planificación territorialAbstract
The author is of the opinion that since the first strategic plan was made in San Francisco, U.S.A., twenty
five years ago, strategic planning for cities has come of age and matured as a useful instrument for both local
governments and communities. During the last quarter of a century, strategic planning has experienced
diverse transformations and met with as many reactions to it, ranging from enthusiastic support to harsh
criticism. It is his opinion that independently to the reactions it gave rise to, strategic planning for cities seems
to maintain its vitality and its usefulness to counter some of the failings evinced by contemporary urban
planning and management. In brief, this process has become part of the urban planning commonwealth
and it appears to work as an effective linkage technique as between economic, social and physical planning.
