Abstract

The object of this article is the analysis of the tourist-driven urbanistic activity in the island Lanzarote over
recentt decades and how this must affect sustainable development. The methodology has been based on the
analysis of the different plans from the islands of territorial arrangement. These plans indicate the growth
limits that are marked in every period and how they articulate with the sustainability of the Island. Then,
there are indicators that approximate to the fast occupation of territory related to the tourist evolution
(production of water, energy, road mobility, evolution of the population, etc.). Really, they are factors that
grow quickly in the last years. It questions the sustainability of an Island that shows, from 1993, the title
of World Biosphere Reserve.
