Abstract

The present work deals with the actual process of the social and economical shaping of urban groundspace
and thus falls exactly between that field of research covers transformations the upshot of the worldwide neoliberal
process observable in any megacity and the imaginary urban scene envisioned by some authors as
to global informaticised or postmodern cities. The study speaks of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Region
and especially of five of its municipalities during the period running from 1991 to 2001. To the purpose of
explaining the shaping process there observed, the paper is structured upon the following questions: How
is the link up between society and groundspace generated? What is the reasons to this? What are the prevalent
social relations upon which the shaping of urban ground space currently rests? How is the market
for this set up and who are the principal social role players actors when it comes to the shaping of urban
groundspace? What, finally, does this social ground space represent once established?
