Abstract

The United States experienced a very radical process of regional change during the second half of the twentieth century. This contribution provides, first, an overview of the American approach to policy-making, considering its major characteristics and the agents that shaped regional
development efforts . The rise of the American Sunbelt, the most important regional phenomenon of the past five decades, is then reviewed and placed in perspective . Two programmatic areas, infrastructural and human capital development, are thought to have provided the platform upon which a process of regional inversion could unfold . Contrasts with western European regional policy-making are considered, to provide a general understanding of
the forces that shaped the rise of the American periphery.
