Why deurbanise, deconstruct and renaturalise?: justifications for initiating ecosocial transition on tourist coast

Abstract

The just ecosocial transition poses the challenge of a paradigm shift for the disciplines of architecture and urbanism: they must adapt their ideas, procedures and practices. The culture of modernity pursues progress and encourages growth to achieve it. However, there is a manifest incompatibility between physical and economic growth and the ecosocial objectives of a new paradigm for the planet. Degrowth and post-growth theories propose changing the growth paradigm through a just ecosocial transition. But this transition presents the problem of representing the desirable future. The research focuses on case studies on the coast (and specifically in the coastal ecotone) that justify deurbanization, deconstruction and renaturalization, where legal, economic, cultural, social and ecological problems are evident. The results are first answers to begin the transition, where urban and tourist excess is a problem. It includes cases that respond through “don’t”, “redo”, and “undo” propositions.
