Abstract

The article is based on the definition of the social impact of a territorial project as the
global-perception —result of the sum of the individual assessments— that a particular local society
has of the pros and cons of a particular intervention on the territory. The social impact is in short a
subjective assessment of the unbiased impacts (physical and socioeconomic) of a performance by
the local society. From this viewpoint the social impact is established largely by the social, economic
and political territory and the characteristics of the local society.
This paper is not intended to analyze the discussion or conflict itself but the main focus or objective
focuses on determining what capacity they have to modify or stop a project and what consequences
have on the territory. This idea is exemplified through the analysis of three cases located in
Catalonia that led to discussions beyond the territory concerned and in different social groups.
