Abstract

The article reviews an international research study whose principal aim was to determine whether the
public or private ownership of city water supplying was the better in terms of efficiency. After having
suggested arguments for or against privatisation and having presented the overview offered by the research
project, the paper concludes that there is no irrefutable evidence to demonstrate the superiority of one type
of management over the other and that a mere change in the ownership of a company does not guarantee
greater efficiency to then suggest that the possible beneficial effects of the privatising process would any way
take some years to make themselves felt. IN keeping with the fore-going, the final part of the paper a brief
look is taken at the state of the question in Spain.
