New architectural paradigms in public housing in Spain: IBAVI and IMPSOL as case studies

The challenges currently being experienced in the field of public housing production in Spain are prompting significant reflection on the paradigm shift that has occurred in residential architectural design.In contrast to the stability of the typological and construction models developed primarily during the 20th century, the economic, ecological and social crisis that emerged in the early 21st century has given rise to novel housing approaches and policies, particularly evident in certain local and regional areas. This article will analyse the starting conditions of the contemporary housing problem in Spain from the perspective of design, locate the areas and agents that are carrying out the greatest innovation efforts and dissect the paradigmatic characteristics of the design of the new residential models.
