New dynamics of migration in rural spaces: housing, social change and processes of gentrification. The case of Empordanet (Girona)
Abstract
In this article the results of a research project investigating the new dynamics of migration in Catalan rural spaces is presented. More specifically, the fieldwork has been carried out in a particular area of Catalonia commonly known as Empordanet. This is a territory characterized by small centres of population and the prevalence of rural landscape, but it is facing transformations that are changing its social and economic composition. The attraction of the landscape and quality of life has spurred a growing migration from urban areas –primarily Barcelona and Gerona– which settle in some of the villages of the area. This migration brings about a series of changes in the social composition as well as in the use of and relation with the territory. And it leads us to the tricky question of processes of replacement of social groups with higher qualifications and level of income. These processes are usually described by the English term of gentrification, although some Spanish researchers propose the alternative term of elitización. In this case it has been studied in relation to housing.Downloads
