Abstract

The main goal in this analysis is to explore the principal theories regarding nationalism and ethnicity. With that purpose in mind, this work will explore the most relevant contributions to the study of their emergence, evolution and possible manifestations. Thus, this work addresses the most representative theories in the subfield and considers specifically the interdisciplinariety that is inherent to the understanding of this phenomenon. A chronological approach is proposed here, which in addition allows us to incorporate the most recent researches alongside with the classical works. To incorporate the dynamic component in the field is therefore relevant, since new studies are produced even nowadays, establishing a dialogue between them and with the pioneer works. A central conclusion in this article is that these theories display all their potential when they are considered as complementary rather than as exclusively rivals.
