Abstract

The idea of civic education refers to two different academic debates: the one about education and the other one about citizenship. However, the academic discussion about the civic education has not been able to properly analyse the relation between these two debates. Using the morphological analysis of ideologies, this paper aims to build some ideal types that allow the scholars to think about the problem of civic education, but also to reflect on the political-theory debate about citizenship without losing sight of the sociological reality. This might open new lines of investigation, offering an innovative theoretical framework to make empirical analysis of educational and electoral programs, public policies or political and educational discourses that are focused on civic education. Thus, this paper closes with a brief analysis of the party manifestos presented by several political parties for the 2019 general elections, which confirms the usefulness of the proposed ideal types for political and educational research.
