Abstract

This paper analyses the functions and the development of the elections in an authoritarian system as Algerian one. For this purpose, the last electoral processes held in Algeria are studied: the legislative elections of 2002, the presidential elections of 2004 and the presidential referendum of 2005. In relation with them, it is examined the freedom and the degree of political competence in the elections and what extent the elections accomplish their functions of obtaining representation and producing government.
