Abstract

This article attempts to provide insights into the political and cultural development of the elector’s role in Spanish Liberalism during the mid Nineteenth Century. Through studying electoral legislation, especially during the parliamentary debate stage, and publications about the right to vote, we strive to understand the intellectual forces and the cultural values that shaped the majority’s concept of political representation. The visions defended by various liberal parties —and in addition the process by which antiliberal groups borrowed their language— demonstrate important common features, but at the same time reveal differences that can be better explained by political culture that in doctrinal terms. The comparison between Spain and other western countries allows us to evaluate the individual’s lack of political legitimacy
