Abstract

This article shows how important it became to political parties in Spain to be able to brand themselves as Social-Democratic as of the mid Seventies. It reconstructs the frustrating story of attempts to achieve Social Democratic unity. Despite all its difficulties, this did eventually end up with all parties contributing to the formation of a political center and the identification of a leadership elite with sufficient skills to tackle the daily vicissitudes of the transition period as well as some of the main economic and social reforms needed at the time. The article concludes that the leaders of those formations showed an enormous capacity to adapt, getting involved in political projects to forge unity and generating a practical approach to political action.
