Abstract

This paper analyzes the legal nature and scope of the diplomatic and consular protection of the European Union under the law currently in force and the future prospects raised by the proposal for a Council directive released by the European Commission. The paper analyzes the evolution of the content of this right since its introduction in the Treaty of Maastricht to the proposal for a Council Directive on consular protection recently released. Finally, some conclusions on the legal nature, the content and future prospects on the diplomatic and consular protection established by the Treaties are included.
