The island of Menorca was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, due to the high
degree of compatibility achieved between economic activities, highlighting tourism, resource consumption, and the preservation of an exceptional heritage and landscape. Since 2003, it has had an
Insular Territorial Plan that has regulated the territory, landscape, and specifically tourism, ensuring these qualities that made it deserving of that designation. The Insular Territorial Plan has completed its review and update to address the challenges that have arisen over two decades, with the aim of advancing sustainable development. This provides an opportunity to reflect on the scope of a territorial planning document and the suitability of the implemented model of sustainable island development.
