Geodiversity assessment of the Sierras Subbeticas Natural Park and Geopark (Córdoba, South of Spain)

Abstract

The Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park became member of the European Network of Geoparks and UNESCO in 2006 and 2015, respectively. This was possible owing to its richness in fossils (ammonitico rosso facies, rich in ammonites) and to the presence of very good examples of endo- and exokarstic morphologies. The geodiversity valuation is a key issue for geoparks in order to know well its spatial variability and, thus, to improve the land management in these natural areas. This study aims to value geodiversity by means of the application and comparison of three quantitative methods, previously published by different authors, based on map algebra. The results showed a very high spatial variability in the geodiversity from the studied geopark, different depending on the method considered. This indicated the need of searching and defining new and better methodologies to achieve a more reliable cartography for the land managers of natural protected areas and geoparks.
