Abstract

The level of governability and democracy in Latin America mainly depends on two sets of factors: Firstly, a climate of consensus, respect and distance from partypolitical bickering, and secondly, an economy that allows citizens’ living standards to rise, avoiding situations of poverty that can be used by populist or authoritarian parties to try to grab power. If these minimum conditions are met, the underpinnings of democracy will be significantly stronger and help prevent too much stress between the state’s different branches of power, namely the legislative, the judiciary, the executive and also the Constitutional Court.
