Agrarian cooperativism in Brazil: a way out of poverty?

Abstract

Land concentration is one of the main structural causes explaining endemic poverty amongst the Brazilian peasantry. In this context, a series of peasant movements reclaim a more egalitarian distribution of land, pressing the Government for a real land reform. They also propose agrarian cooperativism as a means of restructuring the productive model. This is the best way, they argue, to avoid the vulnerability peasants face as individual suppliers.
