Property rights and Pyrenees economies crisis: A long term approach
Abstract
Starting from the analysis of common lands in the Pyrenees, this essay examines the relationship between the persistence of commons and the crisis in which the economies of these regions have been immersed throughout the past two centuries. To this end it measures the degree of persistence of common mountains, follows their main systems of regulation, and analyses its adaptation to economic changes in the long run. The main conclusion is that commons don’t seem to be a definitive factor in the crisis of mountain economies. However, the regulations established for these spaces by the State Forest Administration were of little help to generate local development, and, therefore, contributed to the aggravation of the crisis.Downloads
