Costa Rican agrarian model in the globalization context (1990-2008). Opportunities and challenges to reduce rural poverty
Abstract
This article discusses the new agrarian model implemented in Costa Rica throughout the period 1990-2008 based on non-traditional agrarian exports (NTAEs) promotion and transnationalization of agriculture and agroindustry. In doing so, the paper focuses on the impact of the model on rural and agricultural sectors as well as the subsequent opportunities derived from the new model to reduce rural poverty from a multidimensional perspective (incomes, food insecurity and vulnerability). Considering the spaces created by of the new agrarian model, the article analyses new income and employment opportunities derived from rural non-farm employment and contract farming in Costa Rica. The paper finally summarises the problems resulted from the new model; specifically, the increasing rural vulnerability and growing food insecurity in rural areas outside the Central Valley.Downloads
