The beginnings of sociology of work: Jane Addams, Hull House and the Chicago Women’s School

This article rescues the social thought of Jane Addams; introduces the social center who led, Hull House, and its contributions to the labor movement; and recovers the forgot-ten history of the Chicago Women’s School through their publications in the American Journal of Sociology on different areas of the sociology of work. From the intersection of gender and knowledge policies in social sciences, we argue that male/stream history has not only lost the previous contributions, but also a particular epistemological pro-posal: an epistemology of neighborhood from the everyday, relational and cooperati-ve, from a radical pragmatism that merges research, reform, activism and social theory.
