From Lives to Discurso in the biographies of Thomas More: Roper, Harpsfield and Herrera

This article undertakes a comparison between the biographies of Thomas More’s written William Roper and Nicholas Harpsfield and Fernando de Herrera’s Tomás Moro. The three texts were written by Catholics, but the backgrounds and experiences of the English and the Spaniard produced different kinds of texts. Roper’s and Harpsfield’s Catholicism, marked by the repressed condition of this confession and the experience of recantation and exile drifts them towards biography. Fernando de Herrera, however, sets out to write his essay from the background of a triumphant and repressive Catholicism in Spain and is more concerned with issues other than biography.
