Emotions and early modern diplomacy
The case of Iberian ambassadors at the Elizabethan court

As emoções pertencem à nossa esfera mais íntima, sendo fundamentais à cognição e ao discurso, constituintes da identidade e do sentido de pertença. A diplomacia, por outro lado, incorpora as dimensões da esfera privada e opera em esferas públicas, espaços transnacionais e palcos políticos. As missões dos embaixadores combinam essas duas esferas, interna e externa, privada e pública.
Tanto Espanha como Portugal mantiveram embaixadores em Inglaterra durante o reinado de Isabel I. Embora partilhassem dos mesmos valores religiosos, bem como de idênticos interesses económicos e políticos, representando famílias reais com laços de sangue sólidos e ancestrais, as suas missões tiveram configurações e resultados bastante distintos.
O presente artigo analisa as missões diplomáticas ibéricas na corte isabelina à luz da investigação recente sobre emoções na diplomacia, indagando sobre a presença de um comportamento emocional colaborativo e sincronizado entre os diversos atores do Estado.
