Abstract

The 2024 mexican judicial reform was the consolidation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s desire to assimilate the administration of justice into his political power and that of his political party. Although his intentions were never explicit, they become clear when closely examining its conception, proposal, and enactment. Throughout the following paragraphs, I intend to highlight the inconsistencies and desperate maneuvers surrounding the judicial reform through a straightforward account of the events undertaken by all involved actors—promoters, supporters, and critics alike—. I begin with a brief description of the conflicts that led to President López Obrador’s initiative, followed by an overview of its content, subsequent modifications, the challenges it faced—or ignored—, and finally, the posible—though undesirable—consequences and problems we will have to confront due to its implementation.
