Abstract

Five years after the 2008 banking crisis the EU finds itself trapped by the combined effects of several other associated crises. There is an economic crisis, a debt crisis, an institutional crisis of governance, a profound democratic deficit and most critically, a crisis of integration. As a consequence, the solutions for the economic and debt problems have been ineffective and often counterproductive. If these failures remain unsolved, their consequences will continue to endanger the Eurozone and even the EU itself. The EU must find a solution to those problems, with the assistance of the political parties and the participation of the citizens, in order to guarantee its own future, the future of the member Estates that comprise it and the future of its citizens.
