The dictatorship of Primo de Rivera used the caciquismo created during the Restauración as a way to keep control over the local places. However, the new institutions of the dictatorship (Unión Patriótica and Somatén) were places of confrontation between old and new oligarchies, which until then had not had access to the power. This work of Local History begins with a critic of the clientelismstudies that analyze from top to bottom, and then gets into the knowledge about the construction, transformation, and conflicts of the caciquismoin the rural areas.
