Abstract

This article addresses the changes and continuities in Catalan maritime migrations from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Our aim is to assess the impact of industrialisation on them, and whether, as in northern Europe, continuities prevailed. To this end, we study the evolution of maritime labour markets, specific migratory networks and the socio-demographic profile of migrants. We also focus on their settlement patterns and the labour conflicts and the associations in which they played a leading role. We focus on three main areas: Terres de l’Ebre, the city of Barcelona and the Costa Brava.
