Abstract

The diary of the honoured citizen of Barcelona and doctor of Arts and Laws Josep Monfar y Sorts (1631-1696), which covers the years 1683 to 1687, is a good example of personal memory, but also of an attempt to preserve certain news about his hometown, Barcelona, in the manner of an institutional chronicle. In this work we have focused on two of the aspects in which the diary stands out: urban violence and war. Monfar had the success of preserving for posterity a whole series of news about the violence, civil and military, that agitated the society of his time, but also numerous news about the Royal Army of Catalonia, which can be contrasted and complemented with other types of sources, at a time when public opinion began to be fed by all kinds of warnings, news and rumors.
