La traducción codificada: las artes y vocabularios hispano-filipinos (1610-1910)

Resumen

La tarea misionera de descripción de las gramáticas y los lexicones de las lenguas filipinas fue, durante más de tres siglos, doblemente aplicada. En primer lugar, en el sentido de que del dominio gramatical y léxico de tales lenguas se había de derivar la posibilidad de evangelizar a sus hablantes. En segundo lugar porque existía una vertiente contrastiva y empírica que pretendía habilitar a los religiosos para comunicar y comunicarse con los naturales. Las artes y vocabularios resultantes son tanto productos de la exogramatización europea como de la traducción entre lenguas muy diversas (desde un punto de vista tipológico). Hasta finales del siglo XX no se ha empezado a investigar de modo concreto en tal labor aplicada, de indudable interés tanto para la historia de la traducción hispánica como para la de la historia de las ideas lingüísticas. Abstract Translation Codified: the Hispanic-Philippine Arts and Vocabularies Joaquín GARCÍA-MEDALL The missionary task of the Spanish friars in the Philippine Island was, during more than three centuries, an applied work from a double point of view. First, because the mastering in these grammatical and lexical aspects of the languages was the sine qua non condition to spread the Word of God among the Philippine speakers. Secondly, because it had an empirical and contrastive side: its main aim was to become the friars able to communicate and to be understood by the people. The Artes and Vocabularios are, at the same time, a European exogrammatization and a product of translation between very different languages (from a typological view). However, we must wait until the end of the XX century to read some investigations on this applied task. It is an interesting topic both for the history of Hispanic and European translation and for the history of linguistic ideas.
