Abstract

This work presents a possible solution to one of the major causal of traffic accidents in urban environment as well as in highways: the high speed on the part of the drivers. The developed system is based on the combination of an easy low-cost sensor-data wireless network and a commercial vehicle that has been modified in order to carry out an autonomous driving. The system here presented is based on the combination of sensory information coming from the infrastructure - Zigbee sensors - with the communication of this information to the vehicles to adapt the speed in function of the external environment. The system has been tested in the private driving circuit at the IAI-CSIC facilities through a vehicle equipped with the necessary instrumentation to carry out the longitudinal control of the vehicle - break and throttle pedals - autonomously. There have been realized three experiments in real traffi c conditions: a speed control before a risk curve, an automatic control of a pedestrian crossing and a crossing vehicle. They show the good behavior of the designed system.
