Abstract

Addressing the modelling of the energy behaviour of nations and their economies is not an easy task, maybe because sufficiently accurate variables, which are adaptable to the circumstances of the states, do not yet exist, given the large number of possible variables and scenarios, as well as any influences external to the model, that may exist and which cannot be controlled. On the other hand, although indices and models for evaluating the behaviour of states regarding sustainable development, in the broadest sense of its meaning, do exist, many focus on highly aggregated quantitative variables offered by renowned international organisations, disregarding the energy dimension, which is the main objective that is the focus of this work. This article considers an analysis of variables from the point of view of the three dimensions of sustainable development: nature, economy and society, and, by focusing on the subsystem of energy sustainability, two new concepts appear: regulation and security of supply. All these will comprise a General Energy Sustainability Index to enable quantitative comparisons between countries to be established. Keywords: energy, indicator, electricity, productivity, efficiency, sustainable, model.
